| Aims and objectives |
Weight Concern aims to address the physical and psychological
needs of overweight people and to guide the development of more effective programs of prevention
and treatment.
Other aims include:
- the advancement of public knowledge about the causes, consequences and treatment of weight problems
- the provision of advocacy and advice for overweight people
- the provision of education and training for health professionals, in the care of overweight patients
Weight Concern's short-term objectives are to:
- develop a website section offering support to parents
- secure funding for a randomised controlled trial of the charity's obesity treatment for children
(family-based behavioural intervention for paediatric obesity)
- develop additional volunteer-led Shape-Up groups, offering support to people following the
charity's self-help Shape-Up programme
- expand the charity's training programme for health professionals
Weight Concern's medium-term objectives are to:
- develop a website section offering support to professionals working with overweight people
- develop a website for children aged ten to fourteen
- establish a weight loss register to monitor the effectiveness of weight-loss strategies and
assist with future research projects
- carry out an awareness-raising campaign, to counter misconceptions, help individuals identify
when they or family members are at risk, and offer practical information and support to those who
decide to take action.
