| The Cambridge Diet and other Very Low Calorie Liquid Diets |
The Cambridge Diet is one of the Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCDs). This type of diet reduces calorie
intake to a very low level for a limited time, usually with liquid meal replacements.
The Cambridge diet is based on a calorie intake of only 411 to 548 calories a day. Cambridge meal
replacements are only available through counsellors who give information and support, either one-to-one
or in group sessions. The first stage involves replacing all food with Cambridge products, for no
more than four weeks. Ordinary foods are then slowly reintroduced.
The Cambridge diet is, therefore, basically a very strict, calorie-controlled diet using specialised
foods, with support from a Cambridge Counsellor.
There has been a lot of research into the long-term effectiveness of VLCDs. They are clearly effective
in helping people lose weight, but are often linked with rapid weight regain.
Don't forget: if you decide to follow a particular diet and lose weight, then go back to the old
habits that made you overweight in the first place, you will become overweight again.
Note:
Weight Concern does not receive any funding from manufacturers or retailers of any commercial
weight loss programme.
