Family-Based Behavioural Management of Childhood Obesity:
Three day course on psychological approaches to treating obesity in children |
This practical 3-day course will develop practitioner's skills for delivering evidence-based practice for obesity
in children aged 6-12. Topics covered by the course will include:
- an overview of current best practice in the treatment of childhood obesity
- psychological approaches to improving children's diets and activity habits
- adapting cognitive-behavioural techniques for use with children
- dealing with the dynamics of family eating and activity habits
The course has been developed and will be facilitated by Dr. Paul Chadwick a Clinical Psychologist and Helen Croker
a Clinical Research Dietitian, both of whom specialise in the treatment of obese children and their families.
Summary of course content
- Review of evidence based-practice for weight management in 6-12 year olds
- Appropriate outcomes in the management of overweight in children
- Theory and practice of behavioural management
- Principles of family-focused weight management practice
- Principles of child-focused working in weight management
- Examples of dietary guidelines
eg the 'Traffic Light Eating Plan'

Course philosophy
- This course has been designed to help practitioners develop their own approaches
to working with obese children and their families
- It is not a prescriptive training course: particular dietary or behavioural
programmes are not advocated
- Participants will, however, learn key psychological principles that can be adapted
to work across a range of work contexts
- The course has been designed to encourage practice which is highly creative,
family-focused and based on current expert opinion
