| More about weight and liver disease |
- Obesity increases the risk of a condition called Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
- This condition occurs when fatty deposits build up in the liver
- It is one of the most common forms of liver disease and it is estimated that 1 in 5 of the UK population may show early signs of this disease
- In the majority of cases, a fatty liver does not cause harm, but sometimes the liver can become inflamed and damaged, leading to long term damage
- Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping active can help to prevent and reduce the build up of fat in your liver.
- Doctors might also want to treat associated conditions, like high blood pressure or diabetes.
- For more information on NAFLD, please see The British Liver Trust website
