Am I overweight? Get more active
Why does it matter if someone is overweight or obese?

Excess body fat is not harmless tissue that you carry around with you as extra padding. Excess body fat produces hormones that can make you susceptible to a number of serious illnesses - the more you are overweight, the greater the risk.

Being overweight or obese increases the likelihood of you suffering from:
  • Cancer
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Stroke
  • Liver disease
Obesity reduces life expectancy by, on average, nine years.

In England, obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths each year.
