| Children's obesity treatment in London |
Following the success of the Weight Concern pilot
children's obesity treatment, the Traffic Light Programme, the charity is organising a
clinical trial in collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The Traffic Light Programme will be compared with another treatment option, so the
charity can identify how well they both work.
Christine, whose daughter Faye attended the pilot treatment groups,
recommends them to anyone worried about their child's weight.
"I think the programme is wonderful… The people were very supportive and caring.
Faye loved it and looked forward to going every week, meeting the other children and
giving each other support. It was wonderful at raising my daughter's self esteem…
This ought to be available for everyone. There are so many overweight children, even
three and four year olds. I had been looking everywhere for help for Faye and was even
thinking of taking her to America to try and get help. I am so glad we were able to go
on the programme, and would do anything to help them offer it to more people."
Both of the treatments offered as part of the trial will look at issues such as exercise,
getting support and healthy eating. All members of the family will be encouraged to eat
more healthily and be more active.
As Faye's father, Paul, says:
"This has been a revelation; a positive move for the whole family. It should definitely
be available nationwide."
If you have a child aged between 8 and 12 who is overweight, live in London and would
like to take part in a one of these treatment programmes run at Great Ormond Street
Hospital, contact Helen Croker at Weight Concern.
